He’s a Wonder
“The first time I did a lengthy, Bible-oriented fast was between 1998 and early 1999. Even though I was saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, I knew of areas in my life that still needed much growth and maturity. I may have said I’d let go of some things, but deep within the recesses of my heart, I knew that to be untrue. I believed a consecrated fast was God’s way to help me to get free. I was desperate and decided to go on an absolute fast for seven days, only consuming water. That was a bold effort for a young Christian woman on her first attempt at fasting. For a solid week, instead of accepting lunch invitations from colleagues at work or explaining why I was not eating, I would drive to a nearby strip mall, park my car in a remote parking space, and listen to Christian radio or sermons on CD. Preparing delicious dinners for my children didn’t bother me a bit. I would meditate on select scriptures or fall asleep listening to gospel cassette tapes at night. I would often wake up, say a scripture or a prayer, and then fall back asleep. Within months of that first intentional fast, my whole life transformed. My faith in what God could do grew exponentially. My first successful biblical fast was pivotal in shaping how I view the importance of prayer and fasting to this day. I wish I had made the connection earlier in my youth and consistently maintained that mindset.” Excerpt from When I Was Hungry: Fasting, Praying, and Seeking God’s Face”
